Tree Climbers

Mason received a unique gift from Aunt Lissa and Uncle Alex for his birthday, two passes for tree climbing. He invited a friend from school. EJ took them last weekend. Both boys were pretty excited.
There was quite a bit of standing around as each kid took a turn (they each went twice).
But overall they loved it and Mason said the view was really cool.
Thanks Lissa and Alex!

Spring Break Day 5

After a not so restful night, Mason kept waking up scared, thanks to a "young" Indiana Jones tv show (oops, my fault) and eventually fell asleep in our bed. Not to mention, my allergies are really bothering me and Owen has an unexplainable irritating rash+fatigue. BUT EJ had the day off and I was determined to make it a fun one.
The kids received gift cards to BN for Christmas from their book-loving, librarian - Great-grandmother and I thought today would be the perfect day for them to shop. I knew I could not do it alone with all four.
Perhaps some siblings would line up perfectly and stay all together and not pull books off the shelf that they weren't going to buy. But not my kids. They like to go in four different directions and Avery likes to take off her shoes as soon as we look like we may stay some place and before you know it I am being handed books and I have no idea where they belong. It wasn't exactly how I imagined it in my mind and I did not even bother to try to take a picture for fear of losing someone. And that was with EJ there :)
Needless to say, on the way home as I internally battled against my mothering failures, I realized that each of them got the perfect items and wasn't that my intention?
So instead of capturing a photogenic moment of my children ever so delicately pulling a book from a shelf, I decided it would be fun to capture their personalities by their actual purchases. Thankfully they complied.

Owen took his "book" store gift card seriously and insisted it be used for books. Love, what that says about him :) Three large chapter books, I can hardly believe it and he was genuinely excited. There is hope for my other 3!
He loves Big Nate and has read a lot of those. His newest love is sports books by Tim Green. And this is his 3rd in the Lemonade War Series. He mostly reads books about football and basketball, but sometimes he surprises us :) He started Big Nate first. Today was a good day for reading as he is really under the weather. I took him to the Dr this afternoon (not part of my "fun" day plan) it was not a strep related rash, so we can only assume a viral thing, not super helpful. He has been the first asleep the last 3 nights. That says a lot.
Ah, this boy. Not a single book ;) His love for Legos far outweighs his love for reading. He could not resist. It was his gift card, so I kept my mouth shut. He put it together quickly and has been talking about it all day. He has such a wonderful imagination (part of the reason for his bad dreams) and we can't wait to see how he uses it as he gets older. He wants to be a lego creator. I told him that was fine as long as he doesn't move to Denmark.
One toy, one book, I still have a little influence on this boy :) My animal lover. He wanted something about horses or dogs. Somehow our family doesn't own many Biscuit books and they are really great for early readers, so I seized the opportunity. He has started "reading" to me, he has an even wilder imagination than Mason. Oh, my the stories he tells.
He loves searching for bugs and now he has a home for them. I don't love bugs and am hoping he doesn't find any ;) My guess is he'll find plenty.
I mean... where do I start? This picture cracks me up. I thought I was getting better at pig tails until I saw the pictures. Good grief.
This girl, barely sits through the reading of a tiny board book and she usually tears paper pages. It's getting better, but she must have a flap to flip. So that's what I got. About a lion who has lost her roar. Ha! Avery has not lost her roar and uses it quite frequently. I knew the Lord would not give me a little girl who would sit around all day and look at books, but I had no idea she'd be busier than ALL 3 of my boys at this age.
Over the past several days we've noticed big changes in times that used to bring on major tears. Alleluia! I didn't even realize how much it was stressing me out until it stopped. I know that a lot of her attention span issues will gradually change. At least I am already used to wild and crazy.

So, thank you Mimi, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me this opportunity to capture my children's personalities, even if just for this day. They grow up and change so darn fast.

We ended our day at our church's Good Friday service. No child care there, so we sat as far away from the crowd as we could. I could write a whole post about all the gymnastic moves Avery tried. Needless to say, for a few short minutes, I was surrounded by several of my littlest ones "singing" praise songs and it was all this momma needed. What a great way to end our spring break and start our Easter weekend.
Happy Easter!

Keepin it Cool

Our cousins sent us this fun inflatable sprinkler.
Thanks, Diane! The boys had a blast.

It will be a perfect way to stay cool between wiffle ball games in the yard this summer.

Girls Night Out

My sister gave my mom and I "coupons" at Christmas for a special girl's night out. We cashed it in last night. The idea is to wine and design, but I was the only 1 (of the 3 of us) with wine ;) The woman across the table from me drank enough for the 3 of us combined. Man, was her painting a piece of art!

Everyone followed an instructor, you can see her painting in the very background of this photo. It was supposed to be a row of house in Charleston. I can't remember the last time I painted on canvas. It showed ;) Thanks Lissa, it was FUN!

A Gift

The boys received a Valentine's day package from EJ's mom last week. They love her packages. She has a gift for gift giving. It's her love language and it's nice for my boys to see, b/c it's NOT my strong suit. I can be pretty awful at it actually.
At bedtime that night, Ryan thanked God for his "tandy," (candy) Mason's tandy and Owen's tandy.

Thanks again, Mim!

Special Delivery

This sweet girl arrived on the Friday before Christmas sent by my dear friend, Becca.
Definitely a first for the boys ;)

Thank you Becca! I love her!
This is a sneak peek at Sugarplum's bedding ;) Unless she is still in a crib!

That following Sunday, Mason and I sat near a little girl who had brought a doll. She brushed the doll's hair the entire time. Not very gently, I might add. I think quite a bit of hair was left there. Mason and I shared a quiet chuckle when I whispered, "remind me to get Sugarplum a soft hair brush for her doll." Oh my heart, he loves Sugarplum! Did I mention he is quite the sales man? Sold 3 pairs of earrings to his teacher and a classmate who doesn't even have her ears pierced has asked to buy some ;)

Her Stash

We have a random assortment of items collected for Sugar Plum.
  1. twin quilt and sham
  2. doll house
  3. precious hand-me-down dress
  4. Chinese painting that Owen made
  5. beaded bracelet EJ's mom made
  6. tiny bracelet Mason made
  7. a board book and a chapter book
  8. earrings that match my ring
...and now this pink pony

Mason came home from school the other day with a surprise gift for someone. He had earned a trip to the treat box and chose this for Sugar Plum. Seriously?! This is not the first time he has used the treat box to get gifts for others. But certainly the first time he took a risk and picked a girl toy. Owen had a field day with this one ;) So we have set the pony aside in her stash. He said he did it incase she came home that day. Oh.my.heart. (You know, in case I flew to China and back during the school day)

This verse struck me differently yesterday. Hebrews 11:1.
"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

I am pondering it and praying it for my entire family. As I look at the lists of waiting children in China, with the potential of seeing my daughter for the first time, I find myself worrying about what the photo and file will not show us. I know we will want more answers. We will spend a lifetime wanting to know more. But I realized after reading Hebrews 11:1 for a 1000th time, that this can apply to our process of accepting a referral. We will naturally want to SEE as much as we can. I am praying not just for us, but our parents as well, that we have faith and confidence in Him, even when we can't see. And that He makes the decision very clear and full of grace.

Treasured

Remember this?  Well, Aunt Lissa did :)
As part of Mason's birthday present, she made him a "treasure chest." Inside was a fantastic toy pirate ship (a treasure from the yard sale ;). She knows him well!
I am so glad I didn't blog about it sooner b/c today I got this picture.
Today, Grandma took Mason for a special over night all by himself. This is what he used for a suitcase. He packed it entirely on his own ;) His current lego creations are underneath his clothes. Oh my heart!

Well done, Lissa, well done!

Giver of All Good Gifts

This photo has kept me thinking.

About a month ago Owen wrote a list of gift suggestions for his birthday. Keep in mind that would have only been 2 months since Christmas. Some of the items were huge in cost and some by size. Here are a few to give you an idea ;) Nintendo D.S., a computer, T.V., 2 football field goals (like the real thing). See what I mean? At the very end of the list it said "no Barbies, no girl stuff." Got to love it!

Well, I was tempted to throw it away. Embarrassed that my son sounded so worldly and greedy. How could he think he needs SO much? Never mind he hasn't a clue how much any of those things really cost. Never mind that I am the very same way, I just disguise my lists by keeping them in my head or writing them in several different places. Heaven forbid we see my sinful heart ;)

I was not excited to buy Owen's birthday present b/c I figured if we chose to get something not on his list, he would be disappointed. But I knew that none of the items on that list would be good gifts for him. A child is going to write a list of items for things they have seen on commercials, catalogs or at a friend's house. They have a fairly narrow view, they don't know all that is out there.

Well, you can tell by his expression in the photo above that he was completely thrilled with his gift. He has been using it every day since then.

This photo has taught me a lot. Owen thought he knew what he wanted. He wrote it all down. He was convinced. Little did he know the gift givers might have some wisdom too. Little did he know there was something else out there.

I am not suggesting that Owen has been forever satisfied with this gift. Or that it was THE perfect gift. He will write another list soon enough or convince Mason to add something to his birthday list that he himself wants ;)

Seeing Owen's expression and delight reminded me that we don't always know what we want. God, the Giver of all good gifts, of THE Gift, His Son, knows what is best for ME. I can write my lists, make my plans and even with the best intentions in mind, but ultimately He knows. My lists and plans are created with that same small minded, narrow view that Owen had. But God knows the big picture. I can't even begin to imagine the gifts He has in mind for me.

As the parent and the gift giver in this example, I myself was delighted to bring such joy to my child's face. How much more does our Father in Heaven delight in bringing us joy?

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:9-11

Oh and EJ saw the list after Owen's birthday (I thought he had seen it or maybe I "lost" it). His response was, "cute, we should really save this." Inside my head I was thinking, you've got to be kidding me. But his words softened my heart and helped me to see all that I have written in this post. You see, God is not surprised by my lists. He knows my very heart. He loves me that much. EJ was not tempted to love Owen any less or bless him any less. And my Creator is not going to love me any less either.

Sorry to be so deep on a Friday ;)

World Water Day

Today is World Water Day.

What if...
every time you turn on water,
wash your hands,
have a drink,
take a shower or a bath,
run the dishwasher,
use washing machine,
wash your car,
water your lawn...
you stopped and prayed for those who don't have access to clean water?

That would be A LOT of praying.

We use water ALL the TIME without even giving it a second thought.
What if it took you all day just to get a tiny amount of clean water for your children?
What if the water you had access to made your children sick?

There is currently a campaign to help rebuild broken wells in India. I am not an actual fundraiser, but my dear friend Courtney is. Today your money is doubled. Please consider. Go here.

22 months

Pictures of Ryan in this jacket are long overdue. I "stole" it during a white elephant exchange this Christmas, just so I could take pictures of him. I am finally getting around to it. He can barely move his arms and until today wouldn't really let me keep it on him for more than a minute. Too bad Halloween is not right around the corner. It's 18 months if anyone wants it ;)
He is not an easy kid when he is sick. I am a little over him right now. It would certainly be helpful if he had more words. We still don't hear much. Occasionally, he busts out with a new word shocking us all. But it's rare. He was weighed at the Dr. office on Friday, 23 lbs yea! He is still wearing 18 month clothes. I really do think the Lord is watching out for me, by giving him small stature (for now). It's hard enough carrying 23lbs around.
He is still our goofy one. He will do almost anything for attention whether it causes him physical harm or not. Thankfully nothing major so far.

Little Gift

My post is probably too late to help anyone this year, as most schools are done today. But just incase you want to store it away for next year. I know I am always looking for cute and inexpensive gift ideas. I used this idea last year too but didn't blog it.
The card says, "Mason is truly blessed to be in such good hands. Here's hoping they stay nice and warm this winter."

I have posted this one before.
