My goal for Work Ethic Wednesdays are to use these five words: manners, diligence, discernment, self-control, and attitude.
If Tuesdays are their favorite, Wednesday is probably their least favorite. Because for "work ethic" it's clean your room day. Fun, huh?
I gave them the same check list each Wed.
I am teaching them to actually clean not just tidy up.
1. pick up toys
2. put away books
3. clean under bed
4. dust their own dresser and bedside table
5. swiffer hardwood and vacuum rug (they fight over those :)
This morning before school Owen said, today is clean our room day (in a depressed tone- not such a good attitude). Mason was still upstairs sleeping and didn't hear his comment.
Little does Owen know, a few elves cleaned his room while he was at school. Mason was home for a teacher work day and when he saw me cleaning Ryan's room he decided to do his own! Such a good opportunity for me to encourage him. And he is so excited to surprise Owen.

5 Days, His Way - Tuesdays
Each day this week, I will post a small blurb about that day's Way. I would love any ideas or suggestions you might have for us. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
Tuesday has become the day we look forward to the most. Technically it's "Teachers and Coaches", but the boys call it "treat" day. This summer when we studied the word obedience, we baked together. It seems like a stretch to see the connection, but if you've ever cooked with a child, a lot can be learned, both for them and me :)
I think baking with my children is full of amazing learning opportunities.
First, we use a recipe. Recipes need to be followed very closely with baking. Not so much for cooking, but with baking a lot could go wrong :) Listening, learning to follow instructions and paying close attention are skills needed for baking and for obeying parents, teachers and coaches. See the connection?
Second, we take turns. Honor and respect are needed for obeying parents, teachers and coaches.
We also pray for their teachers and coaches.

The list goes on and on patience (for me and them) teamwork, controlling our tongue (for me, when something doesn't quite make it into the mixing bowl ;) practice reading, practice measuring, math skills, learning to bake, etc.

We have made jell-o, zucchini bread, pumpkin muffins, caramel apples and apple pie.
I love this day best b/c my kids don't have a clue I am training them.
Best of all we have a yummy treat to enjoy!

Apple Tossing
EJ and Owen had today off for the holiday. We went apple picking! Some of us picked, some of us tossed ;) It was such a fun morning together. We were back in time for Ryan to have an afternoon nap. I even fit in some time for painting (the guestroom) and cleaning.
Started off with apple cider doughnuts
making use of our yard sale purchase- the backpack
Ryan was the tosser. Surprised?
He actually dropped threw one right on Owen's head.
I made EJ take a photo of the evidence.
This time last year I was unable to eat whole apples b/c of my jaw.
What a praise!
5 Days, His Way - Mondays
Each day this week, I will post a small blurb about that day's Way. I would love any ideas or suggestions you might have for us. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
I made a sign for each day of the week. Every morning we rotate the sign. I also made an envelope for each day with 5 cards in them, each with a word pertaining to our Way (most are repeat of the summer study). I rotate the words as we go along. On Monday, we also have our missionary of the day on the fridge. That also rotates and I may start making my own. For now we use the ones available through our church.
Monday is pretty simple. In the morning, Owen reads the day of the week (so Mason can learn them,) the verse and word. We discuss the definition of the word and why it pertains to missions.
After school, normally before homework and during snack we find the country where the missionary is serving on the globe. Then they usually want to see how far or close he/she is from us.
Some Mondays the boys have questions, other days it's all I can do to get that much said. At meals and bedtime we try to pray for the missionary. I especially love this b/c often times EJ and I have already committed to praying for that individual and it's easy to forget. Now we have a set time, plus I am finding that I think of them more often during the week.
Last week, I was able to share a few posts from the missionary's blog. The boys loved seeing with their own eyes where she lived and worked. We also did an art project. It was a light homework day and everyone was in the right mood (this is NOT always the case). We traced our feet and decorated them b/c earlier that day, on my own I had read this verse, How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” Romans 10:14-15
It applied beautifully to our mission-minded day and gave me the art project idea.
I love the vocabulary they are learning. I love the geography they are learning. I love that we are exposing them to parts of the world they would not otherwise hear about. Hopefully we can even begin to correspond with some of the missionaries. One of Mason's classmates from preschool last year has actually just moved to London to serve with WHM. I chose their family on our first Monday. Mason was thrilled and very curious.

Game Day
The soccer season has started off slow. We've had a rainy fall.
The boys were very excited to play this weekend.
Owen is number 6. They both have the same jersey color.
