Wine, Beer and Crackers

Now that Owen is 4 he sits in "big" church with us. This has been an adjustment for all of us, but he has done pretty well. Most Sundays he leaves for Children's Worship (4-8yrs) right before the sermon. Communion Sundays are an exception and he stays with us the whole time. Our church leaders feel it is very important for our children to witness their parents and other believers partake of Communion. Well, this Sunday was the first time he witnessed Communion Sunday. In the past, we have talked/taught about the Last Supper and Communion so he is familiar with the reason we receive Communion. We told him beforehand what would happen and explained why he wouldn't participate.
As you can imagine the service felt twice as long to him b/c he wasn't excused for Children's Worship. He was so curious about when and how Communion would happen. During the sermon he kept whispering, "mama, where is the wine and the beer?" Hmm... so maybe we didn't teach it so well!
Anyway, I am writing all this because it was a sweet time with Owen. I want to write it down so I don't forget. Instead of being embarrassed or annoyed with his whispers I pulled him onto my lap and as the Pastor broke the bread I explained the whole thing. What an awesome privilege we have as parents. I am praying for the day he gives his heart to Jesus and joins with us to receive the bread and wine.

One final scoop

This could possibly be the last ice cream outing of the year.

We decided to cancel out our healthy spinach with ice cream. I wouldn't say the quiche was a hit, but I was very proud of my boys because they tried it and actually ate it. Owen said he'd rather stick with the zucchini. I am fine with that. Anything to get some green veggies in them.

Book Worm

Owen's first chapter book! We always read to the boys before naps and bedtime. It has become a great way to spend one on one time with each of them. Mason is really started to love it too. Owen and I just finished this book together. It was so fun. He totally followed along. He even started getting anxious towards the end b/c he was so curious about what would happen. It also gave me a great opportunity to define big words. He was so excited we've already started the next one in the series.

Low key

We have had a restful low key weekend. I forgot my camera at our one and only outing, a neighborhood party. This was the first time going. There is one in the spring and one in the fall. We actually had a good time. I say actually, because we don't really know our neighbors, so I was very nervous. Fortunately our next door neighbors and the one other family I know showed up. There were plenty of kids and a Moonwalk to entertain Owen. Mason attracted a bunch of Middle school babysitters. Hooray! The long hair and blue eyes always rope them in. Plus I was handed a gorgeous rose from the yard of "grandfatherly" man. In fact, he said he'd like Mason for a grandson. His currently live in Israel and Germany. Sad!

Today we went to church, watched the Eagles sadly lose and did a little yard work. As I write, a new recipe is baking in the oven. I don't think the kids are going to be excited for Spinach and mushroom quiche. I am not sure I am excited either. But EJ loves spinach and the boys love quiche so I am hoping they will like the combo. If not we'll go back to our favorite, zucchini quiche.

After school

One thing that is very different about Owen this school year is how much he talks about his morning. I started noticing it right away but I thought it would wear off the longer he was in school. Today he talked a short ride home and then continuously through lunch. I love it, but often have a hard time totally understanding what he is talking about. He tends to get excited and leave important words out or doesn't have a good timeline of the event and so the order is all skewed. Fortunately he doesn't seem too bothered by my confused expressions. I love that he updates me on everyone's snacks, playground time. Show and Tell is a BIG deal and on those days I hear even more. I am glad he is loving school so much. His projects are getting more exciting to look at too. He is spotting letters all over the place or making letters with his food. Perhaps not good table manners but educational!
According to my mom, I was the exact same way. I think I am still that way if someone is willing to listen ;) Having kids steal my thunder has probably been good for me. Plus now EJ can just read my blog. Just kidding!
